On the 9th August 2010 World renowned surfer and ex 1984 Pipeline Masters Champion, Joey Buran visited Newquay to coach some of the country’s best young surfers, in a free Junior Training Day.
Joey has had an amazing life, from being the original ‘Californian Kid ‘ to winning the Pipeline Masters. He then went on to become a chaplain of a church in California and to become the US surf team coach for two years between 2007 and 2009. Finally in 2009 he was inducted into the prestigious ‘Surfing Hall of Fame’.
An enthusiastic Joey Buran arrived at Fistral to face less than ideal conditions, but despite the choppy 2ft waves, Joey gave the British juniors a briefing on the schedule of the day: a round robin (3 heats and then a final) and to give feedback after each heat.

In September 2009 St.Ives hosted the first Greenaway Pro in memory of much-loved Surfer and lifeguard, Tom Greenaway. A host of the UK's top Surfers and Bodyboarders, including both locals and visitors from as far away as Australia and South Africa came together to compete and celebrate over a weekend of surfing and music. With a unique atmosphere and incredible vibe throughout, the event ended on a high with a monumental, sold-out, after-party. The Greenaway Pro became one of the most memorable events of 2009 in only its first year.
